Candidate worksheet with a documented example

Download the bench-room and movement record (CSV) . Keep operating, approved stored and moving footprints separate. A smaller storage rectangle is not proof that the route into the rack works.

The REP AB-3100 specification and FAQ list 50.5″ length, 23″ width and 16.75″ height and state that the AB-3100 is not designed for vertical storage. Its exact assembly instructions, 45-0023-V1 , linked from REP’s bench guide , show the parts and assembly sequence. The four-page file does not supply a room-clearance figure or a folded-storage footprint, so the planner leaves those entries unresolved. Do not substitute another bench’s instructions.

Hypothetical planning example: a 54″ × 26″ marked bay exceeds that published operating rectangle by 3.5″ length and 3″ width in total. That arithmetic does not establish safe exercise clearance. If the owner’s only storage plan stands the AB-3100 upright, the candidate fails that plan despite fitting the bay. If a required turn, handle access or rack alignment is unmeasured, mark it unresolved rather than “fits”. Choose a different documented arrangement or candidate before purchasing. No real room or loaded installation was tested here.

Manufacturer product page and all four manual pages checked October 16, 2026. Use the existing purchasing guide for ratings and permitted use, then the measurements below for your room.

Use the movable room planner

Enter the measured room dimensions, then add the bench and rack separately. The width and depth describe each item’s unrotated footprint; X and Y locate the top-left corner after the selected rotation. Define which end is the front before entering the four side clearances. A quarter-turn swaps width and depth and rotates the clearances with the equipment.

Mark the complete door swing and the access space you need to keep clear as rectangles. These are conservative keep-clear zones that you measure, not a universal door width or an automatically calculated exit route. Draw cabinets, columns and other fixed objects separately. Edge contact is not counted as geometric overlap; it does not establish a practical installation tolerance.

Drag a numbered rectangle or select its item button and use the arrow keys. Open that item’s stored record to enter its approved parked position, dimensions and clearances. Nothing carries over from working mode. A missing stored record stays missing, and the report identifies equipment omitted from the current view. Save edits before switching views; CSV and print preserve saved records from both modes.

The diagram checks rectangular intersections and room boundaries. A rack’s outer outline can contain usable interior space, so an overlap involving a rack requires inspection of its actual uprights, lower crossmembers, safeties and bench alignment. Overlapping clearance envelopes need review for simultaneous use. The planner does not calculate a route between the two positions, overhead clearance, structural loads or a safe exercise arrangement. Follow the checks below before purchase or installation.

Use this worksheet after you have narrowed the specification choices. The weight-bench purchasing guide explains how to interpret ratings, allowed exercises, mechanisms and warranty. This page checks whether one documented candidate works in the actual garage.

Measure movement between positions as well as each endpoint

A bench can fit in its parked and working rectangles but fail on the route between them. Draw the complete path, including turns and thresholds, using the manufacturer’s approved transport orientation.

Check three transition points separately:

  1. Storage exit: can the specified handle be reached and the bench moved without lifting by a pad or adjustment mechanism?
  2. Room turn: does the moving footprint clear the wall, vehicle and other equipment throughout the turn?
  3. Rack entry: can the base enter and center without lifting over a crossmember or leaving a wheel or foot unsupported?

Use a paper or tape outline for pre-purchase planning; do not simulate a loaded exercise on household furniture. After delivery, follow the manual’s unloaded setup and inspection sequence on the final floor.

Record any conflict by position, such as “transport handle meets cabinet at the turn,” rather than simply “bench too large.” That lets you compare another frame shape or storage location intelligently. A shorter pad does not necessarily solve a wider base, and a folding backrest does not automatically shrink the transport width.

Bring the exact documents to the room

Record the model number, current manual and product drawing. Copy the operating dimensions for every position you expect to use, the stored dimensions, required clearances, floor or anchoring requirements and any environmental limits.

Do not replace a missing dimension with a typical value from another bench. Adjustable backrests, transport handles, wheels and attachments can extend beyond the basic frame.

Mark the complete footprint

Use removable tape or paper to mark the bench in its longest and widest operating position. Add the space occupied by your feet, dumbbells or bar path and the manufacturer’s clearances. Then mark the storage position separately.

Check for conflicts with:

  • garage door tracks, hinges and powered mechanisms;
  • vehicles and their doors;
  • stairs, exits and utility access;
  • racks, plate storage and safeties;
  • lights, outlets, heaters and stored chemicals;
  • the route used to carry or roll the bench.

There is no universal room size or side clearance. The correct envelope comes from the exact bench, exercise, rack and room.

Check rack alignment before purchase

For barbell work, mark where the bench feet and pad must sit for the intended bar path. Compare this with the rack’s instructions and safety positions. Confirm that the bench base can pass between any lower crossmembers and that wheels, handles or adjustment hardware do not block centering.

Do not assume two products are compatible because both have high ratings. The planned load must remain within the documented limits of the bench, rack, safeties and attachments, and the intended arrangement must allow the required setup checks.

Check the floor without improvising

Place a straightedge or use an appropriate level to identify slope, joints and damaged areas. Follow the bench instructions for the required surface. Do not correct rocking with scrap wood, loose rubber pieces or another improvised shim.

If you plan to add flooring, verify compatibility with the subfloor and bench feet. Some materials can stain finished floors or allow a narrow foot to sink or rock. Recheck the full setup on the final surface.

Rehearse access with no load

Map how the bench reaches its operating position and how it returns to storage. Use the manufacturer’s designated handles and transport method. Check door thresholds, turns and pinch points.

For an adjustable or folding model, follow the manual to rehearse every intended position without exercise load. Confirm that each pin, ladder or lock can be seen or checked as instructed. Do not place hands in hinge or support paths.

Garage condition check

  • The location stays within the published operating and storage conditions.
  • Roof, door and plumbing leaks cannot reach the bench.
  • Vehicle fluids, fuel, solvents and battery chemicals are stored separately.
  • The bench does not obstruct an exit, electrical panel or utility equipment.
  • Children and pets cannot operate, climb on or tip stored equipment.
  • The pad and frame can be cleaned with the approved products.

A cover does not solve an unsuitable storage environment, and a floor mat does not correct structural or anchoring requirements.

Final preinstallation checklist

  • Exact model and manual revision recorded.
  • Every planned exercise is allowed.
  • Ratings and adjustment-position limits were reviewed in the purchasing guide.
  • Full operating and storage outlines fit.
  • Rack, safety and bar paths align.
  • Floor and any anchoring requirements can be met.
  • Transport and adjustment can be completed as instructed.
  • Exit, garage door and vehicle paths remain clear.
  • Environmental and cleaning conditions are suitable.

This checklist does not certify a bench or structure. It exposes conflicts before delivery and gives the manufacturer or qualified installer concrete questions to answer.
